Solar Panels as Sustinable as the Energy they Produce
Our Beneficial by Design Philosophy
SunPower solar panel sustainability benefits from a closed-loop strategy that drives our business practices at every stage of our product life-cycle and beyond, extending to our employees and communities around the world.
We proactively work with socially equitable and environmentally vigilant suppliers, and we regularly assess our supply chain for compatible eco-friendly practices.
SunPower solar panels have a uniquely short Energy Payback Time. We not only make solar a smart choice for homes and businesses, but for the environment as well.
We endeavour to make smart choices about the materials we use…and don't use, including seeking out "conflict-free" materials and avoiding materials of concern that could result in hazardous waste.
We take responsibility for solar panel sustainability throughout our products' life-cycle and are committed to providing appropriate reuse and recycling options for our products.
We work to reduce waste at every opportunity, including taking water conservation measures and seeking Zero Waste to Landfill and LEED certifications for our own factories.
We also work to empower communities through education and by providing energy to those in need.
We source heavy materials locally whenever possible and incentivise our employees to reduce their CO2 footprints.
Manufacturing & Solar Panel Sustainability
Solar panel sustainability requires thinking about manufacturing impacts in a multi-dimensional way. Long term change will come from rethinking the way we make and use consumable products. As such, we annually track and record key metrics associated with the manufacture of SunPower products, including water use, energy use and Greenhouse Gas Emissions. Learn more.
Cradle to Cradle Certified™
SunPower Maxeon direct current (DC) panels were the world’s first solar panels to earn the prestigious Cradle to Cradle Certified—Bronze designation for solar panel sustainability. For this certification, panels go through a rigorous evaluation of sustainable practices in the areas of: material health, material reutilization, renewable energy and carbon management, water stewardship, and social fairness.
Cradle to Cradle Certified is a certification mark licensed by the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute. Visit the Cradle to Cradle website for more information on the evaluation categories.
Measuring our Impact
Not only do our products help others reduce their carbon footprint, but we measure and reduce our own environmental impact.
Our panel manufacturing plant in Mexicali, Mexico has been recognized with the solar industry’s first and only Zero-Waste-To-Landfill certification. The certification, published by NSF International, requires that no greater than 1% of material from a facility is sent to a landfill and no more than 10% of material is sent to a waste-to-energy facility.
Quenching the Thirst for a Better Life
Since 2001, Water Mission has combined a deep sense of compassion with advanced engineering expertise to provide safe water for drinking, sanitation, and hygiene to more than 4.5 million people in 56 countries around the world. Learn more about how Water Mission integrates solar energy into their water pumping solutions and why they chose SunPower Performance panels to provide safe water for 65,000 people at the Nyarugusu Refugee Settlement.
Light for the World: Tiny solar lanterns bring hope and light to millions
For 1.3 billion people around the world, reliable electricity is a luxury. Kerosene lamps are the main source of light for a household, but kerosene fumes are harmful to inhale and especially toxic for women and children. Nokero Solar has a solution that is already improving millions of lives in more than 120 countries.
We strive for transparency and a high level of accountability for true solar panel sustainability that’s reflected throughout our Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) practices.
